AquaQuik 4512 Solar Heater Review

AquaQuik 4512 Solar Heater
Average Reviews:

Purchased the AquaLivin' Solar Heater and it burst apart at the seams within a week of installing it. Also, the heater is designed with fittings that the water hose fits on. Water leaks out of both fittings where the fitting fits onto the body of the heater....should have been designed to where the fitting was molded into the body.
The heater has a clear dome that goes over the top of the unit. On the third day I noticed that the clear dome kept popping off of the heater when the pump was on...when the pump was off it would fit perfectly. About two days later the heater burst at the seam. Luckily my pool pump didn't burn up when all of my water drained out down to the skimmer.
If you do purchase one of these always keep an eye on the clear dome to make sure it doesn't pop off...this is a sign it may be getting ready to burst.
The company was very good about sending me a replacement. I haven't installed the replacement yet.

Stiebel Eltron DHCE 10 Electric Tankless Water Heater, 240V, 9.6 kW Review

Stiebel Eltron DHCE 10 Electric Tankless Water Heater, 240V, 9.6 kW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've put up with years with having to run the hot water at my kitchen sink for 3 minutes before I got hot water, which was actually only warm. I live in a house where the water heater, powered by propane, is about 40 feet from the kitchen. I installed the DHCE-10 in a weekend myself, it fit on the back wall right under the sink. The hardest part was running the 40 amp circuit over a 60 foot run for the power. Plumbing wasn't bad, this unit uses the cold water for the inlet, I turned off the hot water valve under the sink and capped it off and teed into the cold water line. The outlet side of the heater is teed, one to the hot water inlet on the faucet, one to the dishwasher.
Before having the DHCE-10 I would have to keep the propane heater turned almost as high as it would go so the water would be hot at the kitchen sink. There was a fair amount of temperature drop over a 40 foot run in a slab foundation. After powering up the DHCE-10, I had 120 degree water at my kitchen sink in 3 seconds, amazing. The first thing I did was turn my propane heater down to low, just warm enough for showers in the baths, which are in close proximity to the propane heater. Another benefit is my dishwasher is now cleaning the dishes more effectively with 120 degree water which is what is recommended.
As for the heater itself, it is well constructed, compact, simple and easy to set. There is a dial on the front which adjusts the water temperature from off to 125 degrees. The unit is self limiting to a max of 125. The ambient temperature of the water going into the unit is 50 degrees, (I live in the South, test done in winter), my flow rate is 1.3 gallons per minute at my sink. The unit heats the water instantly to 120 degrees. The unit only consumes power when the water is turned on, there is a flow detection switch that powers up the unit when water flows through it. It turns off instantly when the water flow stops. Can't get any more efficient than that. If you live in an area where you're ambient water temperature is lower, it may be necessary to reduce the flow at the faucet to achieve the desired outlet temperature, or install one of Stiebel Eltron's larger or smaller units, they have a variety of sizes depending on your needs. The hot water temperature is relative to your flow rate and the ambient temperature of your cold water. The Stiebel Eltron web site has graphs and recommendations for your area.
I've been using the unit for a month now, I've monitored my propane usage, it has dropped dramatically. Prior to installing the unit we would turn on the hot water at the sink for washing hands and rinsing dishes, it usually didn't run long enough to actually get any hot water but it did run long enough to cause the propane heater to cycle on to reheat the water in the tank. I've seen no appreciable rise in my electric bill so far. I would expect the unit to pay for itself over it's lifespan.
I highly recommend this unit, I chose it over competitive units for it's warranty, quality and reputation. All copper internal components, quality switches and connectors. If I were to ever build a house I would install these units in each bath and the kitchen sink instead of having a tank style heater that cycles on and off whether or not you use any hot water. I would prefer this style unit over a whole house tankless heater also, as these install right at or near the the point of use eliminating the long runs resulting in temperature drops.

It was relatively straight forward to replace and install on my furnace.
I replaced the motor in March 07, after 10 years of operation from the OEM motor. This replacement motor only lasted 17 months. This motor of course only has a 12 month warranty, now requiring me to replace it again after one season. The voltages being delivered to the motor are consistent, and it is somewhat of a disappointment that it was not built with longevity in mind.

Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad #FW Review

Indus-Tool Cozy Electric Foot Warming Pad #FW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this last winter (2004), despite the many reviews warning about the odor emitted, and boy, do I regret it! I thought I could tough it out; most people said the horrible skunk smell would GO AWAY after some time, and, to me, warm feet would be worth a temporary annoyance. As some have suggested, I plugged this in the garage first, to try to burn off much of the odor before bringing it inside. I left it plugged in a large part of the day for about two weeks. The smell was definitely horrible, but I guess because our garage is very large, and far from airtight, the full extent of the noxious odor was not obvious, until I moved it into the office. In just a few minutes, the entire HOUSE smelled like a charred skunk. But it was more than a smell, it was a TASTE as well, and we coughed quite a bit if we tried to stay in the office with it, and I got a horrible headace. I turned it off and decided to give it another week in the garage, this time I left it plugged in all the time. The second try in the office was JUST as bad as the first, and at this point the mat had been "burning off" its smell for over 3 weeks! I stubbornly left the mat in the office for a week, forcing myself to use it, trying to adjust to or ignore the skunk that was attacking my nose with every breath. After all, it REALLY DID keep my feet nice and toasty warm. Finally I'd had it, I couldn't take it anymore. The headaches and permeating odor were simply not worth it. I took the thing and threw it in the garage, unplugged, where it remains to this day. I only wish I had been realistic and sent the thing back when I had the chance. It is an absolute nightmare. By the way, the reason I thought to write this review today is because when I sat down at my desk I was reminded of this mat , as I am every day, because I smelled the lingering, embedded stink of burning SKUNK that it left behind. And this is October 2005, nearly a year later and several carpet cleanings and after it briefly occupied this space. Does it warm your feet? Definitely. But you've been warned, it isn't worth it!

As anyone who's been out in the cold knows, toasty feet go a long way toward keeping the rest of you warm. That’s why using an Indus-Tool FW Cozy Foot warmer can help reduce your indoor heating costs. At only 90 watts, one of these units tucked under a desk allows you to turn the building thermostat down, thereby saving you money. The warmer is less costly to use than a space heater, and safer, too, as there are no exposed heating coils or carbon monoxide emissions. ETL listed. Lifetime warranty.--Josh Dettweiler
What’s in the BoxFoot-warmer pad, power cord

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let’s break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer’s usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

As a service provider, here was a recent and typical service call on a 74 model. the customer lives 1 1/4 hr away, call Sat with an error code 11. this had been in service for 3 months and worked fine, then quite. Rheem requires as a service provider, that I call in, get a case number and proceed from there. They are available Sat for tech support but good luck waiting on the phone. I came back Monday, trip number two, talked through two levels of tech support. I didn't agree with their assessment and they sent an ignition module. Wed, trip three, I installed the part and it. I tried to explain, it was most likely a control board and gas valve combined problem and the tech, she didn't think so. after 9 commbined hors of driving and attempts at service, the customer was left with a still non functioning water heater. I've been working on these for about 30 years but when I have to work according to their at a distance analysis, reading a prompter, service fails. They do not have a system of regional parts available and are not willing to allow me to purchase and stock these.
so if you are considering purchasing a tankless water heater, a little due diligence with regards to service will save an enormous amount of heartburn...
Paloma and Rheem need to create a service network that supports those in the field who will be performing warranty work. Until that day arrives, I do not recommend these...

My anode rod in my water heater was shot and like many people, I didn't have clearance to add a new straight one.

Bosch 2400ES NG AquaStar 6.4 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 2400ES NG AquaStar 6.4 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to write an honest review of this product since I couldn't find much online about on-demand hot water heaters. Our tank broke, flooding the basement, and we wanted to look into alternative ways to heat our water efficiently. We're in Boston and the tap water here is about 45 degrees.
The way this works is that when you turn on the hot water in the house, the unit senses the water flow and begins to heat up a set of pipes inside. As the water passes through, it's heated to about 122 degrees.
The pros:
- It works normally, just like before. I turn on hot water, I get hot water.
- You don't experience any standby losses of having a tank - Gas is only used when you are actually using hot water saving both money and energy.
- The water is very hot in the shower. We can also use the dishwasher OR the washing machine with the shower. All three would probably not work well.
- There's no footprint. You put this on the wall, and it's vented outside.
- If something breaks, you replace a part rather than the entire tank, saving time and money.
- If it breaks, there's no flooding!
- We received rebates from both the gas company and from the federal government through a tax credit for the "green" purchase.
The cons:
- It costs more than a traditional tank to both purchase and install. We paid about $1000 for the unit itself, and an additional $1000 to have it installed. We had to have someone drill a new vent (both out and intake), put in stainless steel and PVC piping, and re-route the hot water in our basement.
- It takes a few seconds to up to a minute for the water to heat up.
- It's more difficult to make incremental changes to water temperature.
- You cannot get a "trickle" of hot water. The unit needs a certain flow to start in order not to damage pipes.
All in all, we're extremely happy with this unit since the cons were more a matter of up front cost (but we'll save down the road) and lifestyle changes.

The heater I ordered because mine went out and I went to all local stores and everybody just had a sale on them so they didn't have any in the surrounding towns of me at all! I looked up heaters on Amazon.com found this one was a little sketchy about the product for the price comparing to my last buys on heaters from local stores. Package came in fairly quick. Once opened up and plugged in it was instantly blowing out warm air in a cold room. The features are good just wished it had a auto timer to turn it on like my others do. Overall this is a awesome heater and am thinking about ordering another for another room. It heats my living room and kitchen area pretty good here in Louisiana when it is in the 30's i can stay comftorable. So it is a better product then the other few I have!

Intermatic HB114C 240 Volt Heavy Duty Appliance Timer Review

Intermatic HB114C 240 Volt Heavy Duty Appliance Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this timer to control an air conditioner that I installed in my garage. The air conditioner has its own thermostat, but no day to day clock.
Installation could not have been any simpler. The timer simply plugs into the wall outlet, and then the air conditioner cord plugs into the side of the timer. The timer has a standard, 3-prong, 20A, 240V plug and outlet.
The timer works as expected -- the on and off times are set using the familiar plastic tabs that one often sees elsewhere (on landscape light transformers, water heater timers, etc.).
You may not want to use this plug in or next to a bedroom as the mechanical clock's ticking noise is loud.
For this price, I expected to be able to find a 7-day schedule timer (digital or mechanical), rather than this same-schedule-each-day unit. But I searched and did not find much of a selection among low cost, 240 volt timers.

Mr. Heater MH42T 42,000-BTU Propane Tank-Top Radiant Heater Review

Mr. Heater MH42T 42,000-BTU Propane Tank-Top Radiant Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The triple burner Mr. Heater works wonderfully! Now this is what you call a radiant heater! Prior to purchasing Mr. Heater I was using a Bernzomatic patio heater (that cost significantly more) that didn't heat very well - I had to practically hug the Bernzomatic to feel heat. The triple burner Mr. Heater keeps me toasty warm! I love the red glow it gives off too! I installed Mr. Heater on a 40 lb. propane tank - this is just the right height to keep me warm while on my deck swing.
Mr. Heater isn't a particularly stylish unit - however, it sure does heat well!
I have a few minor criticisms; overall I'm very happy -
During my first week using Mr. Heater the burners kept shutting off - they would not stay lit for very long. I adjusted the thermocouples to position them closer to the burner and I haven't had a problem since.
Mr. Heater doesn't work very well in wind - it works fine in a breeze or a little bit of wind. I tried to use it on my deck in a storm with fairly gusty winds - not a good idea. The wind tended to cause the burner to ignite the chamber that carries the gas to the burner. If this happens - you'll know it.
It'd be really nice to have an electric ignition! The two burner model has this; however I really wanted a maximum amount of heat - I wanted the three burners.
It'd be really nice if the propane tank mounting hardware was adjustable for height. If I mounted Mr. Heater on a 20 lb. propane tank it'd simply be too short to set next my patio table or swing. If you could adjust the height a couple of feet that'd be nice - you can probably jerry rig something.
Overall, it heats great - an excellent value too, in relation to the cost of patio heaters (which is what I use this for).
******* 2//2010 Update *******
While it's been a great product the last couple years, another issue has become evident. Mr. Heater is not rust resistant! It's rusted to the point that I can't use it anymore. I kept it in an enclosed screened in porch so it was never exposed directly to rain. However, rain that was blown in and the summer humidity has had a big impact. I've replaced Mr. Heater with another manufacture's version that doesn't rust.

The Mr. Heater MH42T 8,000-42,000 Btu triple heater is a step up from the two-burner model, giving you the flexibility of using one, two, or three burners. The unit mounts directly to 20- to 100-pound cylinders. It uses infra-red heat, which means that it warms the objects in front of it, not the surrounding air. This gives you more heat per Btu, which means that using all three burners at the highest of the three settings will keep you warm even in miserably cold situations. Each element shuts off automatically with loss of flame. Do not use in unventilated areas. One-year limited warranty.--Josh Dettweiler
