Rheem RTG-74DVP Direct Vent Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes Review

A thoroughly disreputable company. Warranty is worthless. If your Rheem water heater has a 6 year warranty and fails after 3.5 years (as ours did), you may find them using all kinds of questionable tactics to escape responsibility.
On three separate calls to three agents they insisted our heater was 7 years old. They had clearly been trained to say this, the patter was so automatic. When challenged with their own web-site's data, which stated (correctly) that the heater was still under warranty, they did not know what to say and hung up! The house had been built only 3.5 years earlier! And indeed, the heater's body was date-stamped 3.5 years ago. What was going on here? Either Rheem was lying, or the plumber or the plumber's merchant had supplied old product, falsely relabeled. Of course the plumber and his merchant denied that. Finally after a lot of photos, heated phone calls, and intervention by the plumber's merchant in escalating to Rheem management, we discovered the procedure for making a claim.
Rheem's claims are handled by a third party agency, ESIS Risk Management. We supplied photos of the leaking rusty tank and the flooding in the cellar and adjacent room that it had caused. ESIS are apparently tarred with the same dirty brush as Rheem. Despite the overwhelming evidence, ESIS' Susan Fritts insisted there was no proof of defect and that a report was required from a `forensic plumber.' Oh yeah, like we had sabotaged our own heater and voluntarily lived without hot water for two weeks?? The forensic exam could cost $1000 and would not be reimbursed even if Rheem were found to be at fault!! Outrageous! That's more than the cost of a new heater! ESIS and Rheem had created an impossible obstacle.
So we were stuck with buying a new heater. Now these things are built like tanks (ha!). They should not fail after 3. 5 years, sitting untouched in a basement. It makes you wonder if Rheem is supplying old refurbs that are falsely relabeled with a new manufacturing date. And then wriggling like crazy to escape any liability. CAVEAT EMPTOR!

I have a tiny house and had to replace the galv piping with copper. I decided to switch from a tank water heater to tankless and Rheem was recommended by a plumber friend. Not only does this use far less propane, it takes up much less of my precious space and saves water with the quick flow of hot to my shower. I love it. I also will get some tax credit for it due to it's efficiency.

Bosch 2400ES LP AquaStar 6.4-GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water Heater Review

Bosch 2400ES LP AquaStar 6.4-GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Bosch 2400ES because of the excellent reputation enjoyed by Bosch.
The good points regarding this water heater -
- Its operation is very economical as it uses very little propane. I have given it a star to recognize its economy.
The bad points regarding this water heater -
- The water heater shuts down and restarts frequently. This leads to invigorating showers as it alternately produces about 90 seconds of hot water, then about 60 seconds of cold water. Based on what the service techs have told me and the troubleshooting methods they provided, it seems that the unit overheats, shuts down, and restarts after it cools down. The best guess is that the temperature of my incoming water is too high, and the water heater is not capable of heating a little. Being in Hawaii, my incoming water temperature is about 70 degrees. If you get your water as runoff from a glacier, you may find it works just fine.
- The water heater demands a fairly high rate of water flow to activate. This means that it does not activate to heat water when running our Whirlpool washing machine. To get hot water into the washer requires turning on a hot water tap and letting it run long enough for the water to heat, and keeping the tap on as long as the washer is filling. Likewise, the flow into our Bosch dishwasher is too low to activate the water heater. This means the internal (electric) water heater in the dishwasher works to bring the water to the necessary temperature, wasting electricity.
- It is slow to fire up. This means that, when handwashing dishes or the like, if you turn off the hot water you will get get cold water for a spell after the hot water sitting in the pipe has flowed out. As a result, you need to leave the hot water running continuously for such activities. I could understand a brief bit of cold water, but we are talking about 10 to 15 seconds of cold each time the hot water is turned off.
- The water heater uses approximately 5 watts of electricity continuously, more when the exhaust blower is operating. This amount of electric usage is ridiculous and goes far to offset the claimed efficiency.
My experiences with this and my Bosch dishwasher have completely disillusioned me on Bosch appliances and I will avoid them in the future.

Navien NR-240A (CR-240A) Tankless Hot Water Heater with Circulating Pump and Buffer Tank Review

First: the Navien NR-series tankless has only been in service since Oct 2009, so the 2yr+ ownership reviews were done on the CR-series. The CR-series did have issues which were addressed in warranty fixes and massively updated on the NR-series. Second: do your research. I replaced my 17yr old A.O. Smith gas tank with the Navien NR-240A. The NR met my criteria of long warranty, EF, min GPM (zero). It didn't hurt either that I was getting the governments credit either, so I went to energystar.gov to do a lot of research heavy lifting. The "A" model included a small buffer tank (to eliminate the "cold sandwich") and a built in circulation pump. Make sure your plumber (or if you DYI) installs recirculation T's at the longest runs (in my case, master bathroom). Combinded with the built-in circulation pump, this will also eliminate the time it takes to get hot water to your facet (example: from 60sec to 5sec). Do not go with marketing fluff from other manufacturers (such as "market leader", "brand leader", etc...), go with what you need and what your criteria is (EF, GPM, warranty).

With this Navien, you get a 98% efficiency heater, recirculating pump, buffer tank and leak detector. You can vent with PVC pipe due to the low exhaust temperatures, this saves you the cost of stainless steel venting pipe. Comes with remote control. 11 gallons per minute water flow at a 45?F rise. For commercial applications link up to 99 units together.Navien: Energy-Efficient Water HeaterNavien's line of tankless water heaters relies on super-efficient condensing gas burners to create an endless supply of domestic hot water. Because condensing burners extract 98 percent of the heat from the gas flame, operating costs are less than one-half of an average tankless water heater and one-third of traditional tank heaters. And the exhaust is so cool, heaters can be vented with plastic pipe. The Model A shown has a miniature buffer tank to keep the hot water coming even when the flow is reduced to a trickle. The largest models have maximum flow rates of 11 gallons per minute in warm climates, 6 gpm in cold climates.

I've had a RHEEM RTG-74PVN for 3 years and it worked great - endless hot water. Got in the shower one morning and the water did not heat up. Went to check the unit and an error code was flashing. Called RHEEM and told them what was happening. They said it was a bad PCB board and shipped me a new one for free. They paid for installation, but they only have two installers in metropolitan Seattle that could do the work, so it took a couple days. The heater worked for literally half a day and then quit again. I called RHEEM back and explained what happened. Based on the error code I gave them, they said the AIR in my house was the cause and they could do NOTHING! No new PCB board, no service! So the day after I get a brand new part installed, they bailed out and I'm SCREWED!! After calling around and talking to knowledgeable heating plumbers, I found out this is pretty common. These heaters work great for a while, and then the electronics malfunction and RHEEM has no good maintenance/repair system set up nationally to service the units. When it goes bad, you're on your own! Now I have to figure out what to replace it with !

bought it directly from the rheem factory and had it installed the next day, it ran for about 20 hours before the circuit board went out..the water heater it replaced lasted twenty three years and now this new modern up to date junk couldnt even make it one day...SAD..im just glad its under warranty..so far they fixed me up without a problem and its still running great but now im wondering how long it will run after this fix..
pros..constant hot water when taking shower, low gas bill, tax rebate, small
cons...cost a fortune to install whether ur a diy or have it done professionally, makes clicking noises when shutting off and turning on, complicated to the extreme..lot of parts inside that may break..i.e. circuit board, fan, igniter, remote panel, heat exchanger, sensors out the wazzoo

Excellent purchase. Instant hot water. Space saving since it's mounted outside. Only drawback we've experienced so far was when the temperature dipped to -20 and the igniter had some problems that resulted in no hot water for a few days. Other than that, showers on well water for days!

Rheem Outdoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes - RTG-66XP

We have a 2200 sq foot home which had the hot water tank 40 feet from the kitchen and 70 feet from the master bath so it always took a full minute and many wasted gallons of water to get something hot. With the floor plan relocating an indoor tank to the center of the house was not ideal though the indoor tankless would have been an option but I did not want to deal with the work of the air intake and chimney install.
The information on the Rheem outdoor tankless was mixed and stated that is was good to -30 and yet elsewhere I saw it listed at 30. That said, the -30 was on their website so we decided to go with it. Upon receiving it and the additional grey pipe cover which was not sold here at Amazon. I did find and buy it at Wholesale America and it is definitely something you'll need to make this a clean install.
SKU: RTG20169XG Weight: 9 lbs Rheem RTG20169XG Grey Pipe Covers for the RTG66-X $64.29
After installing my pipes, gas and electric I insulated this cover with hard Styrofoam and of course also ran a heat tape on the pipes coming out and going in. In mounting this tank to the house, I stayed low and used a 2.5" hole saw to make 5 holes through to the crawl space which will allow more of that warmth to access the now insulated pipe cover.
It is still early November in Kansas and if any problems develop during the colder parts of winter, I will update this posting.
As far as the tank and how it works, it is wonderful! We are using propane from a 1000 gallon tank and as with most of these installs, the tank has a first stage regulator and then at the house is a second stage. We have a gas furnace, dryer, stove and now this higher Btu hot water tank so I was naturally concerned that I might need to install a tee and place a second second stage regulator at the house and then run a dedicated line to the new water heater. I opted to try and tap into the lines using the appropriate flex pipe for high volume and it worked out just fine with only the one regulator. We tested this by running the furnace, dryer, oven and burners while running hot water. By holding a meat thermometer in the stream of hot water while the tank thermostat was set at 120F, I had a steady reading of 119 and when set at 130 I had 129 which means one or the other of these is off a wee little bit but the tank produces the hot water as it should! How cool is that?
With regard to the remote thermostat that you'll get with this... it only goes up to 120F until you bypass that if you want to go to 125, 130, 135 or 140. The instruction sheet that came with our tank was confusing and instructed me to open the tank cover and switch a dip switch and push a button and watch for a flashing light etc. Please don't waste your time!! I called their 800 number and talked to somebody in 'trouble shooting' and she instructed me to simply go to the thermostat and with it set at 120, hold the 'temp up' key until 140 pops up. Then I think she said to hold both up and down keys and that would lock me into the higher temp settings. You can then adjust in 5 degree increments and we chose 130 because we have a dishwasher and no little ones in the house.
The unit works well delivering endless supplies of hot water and is very quiet not that it matters outside!

My traditional tank heater was on its last leg, and I knew it would need to be replaced. I had been looking into tankless models for while. After considering multiple brands with comparable maximum flow rates, I bought the Rheem RTG-95DVN. Key reasons I settled on this model? It had among the lowest minimum activation flow rates, which seems to prevent the so-called cold water sandwich I've heard people complain about. I've done everything I can think of to force this "cold sandwich" to happen, and it just won't seem to happen with this particular tankless model, which is just fine by me. Also, this model does not require the expensive adapter almost all other models require to connect the unit to the stainless steel concentric vent piping.
Installation costs aside, I love this new water heater. For good measure, I had the installer set the thermostat at 130 (10 degrees above the factory setting). For the first time in a long time I do not have to worry about running out of hot water. The water is more than hot enough, even with at least one major appliance pulling hot water at the same time the shower is going. We have not yet exceeded its ability to produce hot water for multiple outlets.
And yes, I also love having the extra room for storage that the traditional hot water heater occupied.
